The Dunes of Barrow project is a new and exciting project to enhance and restore the internationally important shingle and sand dune systems of Walney and Foulney Islands near Barrow. The project is lead by Morecambe Bay Partnership as part of the Headlands to Headspace progamme, and delivered by Cumbria Wildlife Trust with funding from WREN. Over the next five years we will be reinvigorating the dunes, removing alien invasive plants and establishing more sustainible grazing regimes.
By the end of the project we will have restored large areas of currently degraded dunes to their former glory while in the process making better conditons for some of our most specialist species from breeding terns and ringed plovers, to rare plants and specialist invertebates like the Northern dune tiger beetle, restricted in England to the Irish Sea coast.
